This degree prepares students for professional careers in music, with focused preparation for music ministry, ensemble conducting, music performance, and graduate studies in all fields of music.

There are no prerequisites for this degree.

An audition is not required to declare a major in music for this degree.

Required Courses:


A minimum final grade of C- in each of the following courses fulfills the requirements for this major

Lower Level Performance Lab: All of the following: 4 credit hours


Junior Recital Music Lessons: All of the following: 4 credit hours


Junior Recital Leadership and Performance Training: All of the following: 2 credit hours


Senior Capstone: 3-4 credit hours from the following options:


Students have three options for their required Senior Capstone:

(1) MUSI 4300  AND MUSI 4118 : Project with paper (10 page minimum) and public presentation. Please note that the project proposal must be approved by a panel of music faculty for permission to select this capstone option.

(2) MUSI 4300  AND MUSI 4118 : Pure research paper (25 page minimum) with public presentation. Please note that the research proposal must be approved by a panel of music faculty for permission to select this capstone option.

(3) MUSI 4212  AND MUSI 4118 : Senior Recital (45 minutes of music minimum) with paper (10 page minimum) and public presentation. Please note that an audition before a panel of music faculty is required for permission to select this capstone option.

Suggested Sequence of Courses


Fall - Year One

Music lessons in a group setting. Students may audition prior to July 15 to be considered for private music lessons, MUSI 1111  (30 minute lesson) or MUSI 1211  (60 minute lesson).

Music Major Scholarships: Students intending to apply for Music Scholarships must audition prior to July 15. Contact the Head of the Music Program to schedule an audition.

Course Exemptions: First semester music majors may apply to be placed out of the following required courses by examination: MUSI 1220  Music Fundamentals, MUSI 1218 Introduction to Piano. Contact the Head of the Music Program to request a placement examination.

Private Music Lessons: An audition is required for all first semester music majors in order to be considered for private music lesson courses. Contact the Head of the Music Program to schedule an audition.

Advanced Ensembles: All students are eligible to audition for 3000 and 4000 level advanced ensembles. Some advanced music ensembles include music scholarships for members. Contact the Head of the Music Program to schedule an audition.

 

The following components are required in all degrees:
General education, major, minor, and validation of completion of:

  • overall semester hours - 120

  • institutional semester hours - 45

  • overall advanced hours - 36

  • institutional advanced hours - 24  

Required General Education courses:
SPAN 1411  and SPAN 1412 , CSCD 2341  and CSCD 2342 , or two semesters of the same foreign language 

Acceptable minor fields:
A minor is not required
