The BSW Dismantling Oppression Certificate (DOC) is an interdisciplinary curriculum deigned to educate students about the issues of diversity and oppression within today’s society. In solidarity with Our Lady of the Lake University’s core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in recognition of the complexity in creating a just future, we offer the Dismantling Oppression Certificate. The goal of this certificate is to educate and prepare students with the tools necessary to navigate a dynamic future from a position of knowledge, empathy, and justice. Students will work in the classroom to understand and gain experience with difficult dialogues, issues of race, gender, intersectionality and inclusivity.
The purpose of the BSW DOC is to better prepare students for entry-level positions or graduate training in human services fields by acquiring knowledge of how oppression intersects with issues of diversity and to prepare students to work with oppressed populations with a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths that they bring. The certificate is grounded in a larger concern with social justice issues, with coursework emphasizing issues of power, privilege, and difference.
