PSYC 6372 - Introduction to Dialogues in Bilingual Therapy

This course is designed to enhance students’ Spanish-speaking and writing skills using appropriate grammar and vocabulary and to help future professionals work with Spanish-speaking populations. Emphasis will be placed on conversational fluency needed to provide therapy and assessment services in the Spanish language. Class conversations and activities are intended to further develop students’ proficiency beyond the Intermediate High level as described in the Language Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The course will also focus on translating terminology commonly used in psychology with a theoretical emphasis on systemic therapy concepts and postmodern, strengths-based ideas. Case examples and vignettes will be used to demonstrate psychological and family therapy services with diverse Hispanic cultures in the United States.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum rating of Intermediate High on the ACTFL rating scale as determined by the instructor/PSSSP director.
