SOWK 8306 - DSM and Clinical Diagnosing 3 hour(s) This course prepares students in understanding how to read and comprehend the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) along with learning how to properly identify signs and symptoms of clinical disorders. This course will work towards providing a broader foundation of generalist social work practice in preparation towards an advanced level of clinical knowledge and skills. This course will provide an educational foundation to assist future social work practitioners to develop basic generalist practice social work skills.
This course will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of how to understand the DSM-5 through the following:
● Recognize DSM-5 new diagnoses, new diagnostic criteria, and classifications
● Apply their understanding of the DSM-5 to assessments and diagnosis in complex psychosocial contexts
● List psychiatric disorders and criteria in order to properly diagnosis
● Familiarization with the value and limitations of diagnosis, and other factors that are relevant to a social work assessment
● Identify key features of disorders presented in this class
