Accelerated Bachelor to Master (ABM) English Program:
The ABM English Program will allow qualifying juniors to complete up to 6 hours of graduate classes in our MA/MFA in Literature, Creative Writing and Social Justice. Our Lady of the Lake University’s combined Master of Arts-Master of Fine Arts (MA-MFA) in Literature, Creative Writing and Social Justice prepares students to become critically engaged and socially aware scholars, writers, educators and professionals.This unique program is designed to attract and foster the growth of individuals who wish to combine creativity with practical skills and critical knowledge, all while keeping in mind the pursuit of social justice in their own work, their communities and their professional practice.
Application Requirements to the ABM English Program:
Qualifying juniors accepted into this program must apply by the deadline (see OLLU ABM Degree Program description) during their second semester as a junior, and must meet the following screening requirements prior to submitting the application:
1. completed 75 or more credit hours that apply to the BA in English undergraduate degree with a C- or higher in all major requirements
2. completed all general education courses or equivalents
3. completed all 1000- and 2000- level ENGL required courses
4. earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative overall GPA and 3.0 or higher GPA in all ENGL courses at the time of the application
Program Requirements to start the ABM English Program:
Only students who have met the following requirements will be eligible to enter the ENGL ABM degree program:
1. completed 90 or more credit hours that apply to the ENGL undergraduate degree
2. earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative overall GPA and 3.0 or higher GPA in all ENGL courses at the time of entry
Upon entry into the ENGL ABM degree program, students will be eligible to take two (2) courses six credit hours (6) from the list of courses below concurrently with their undergraduate courses. These two courses will count toward both the MA requirement in the MA degree and the advanced course requirement in the undergraduate BA degree in ENGL. In order to remain in the ABM degree program, students must:
1. maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative overall GPA and a 3.0 or higher GPA in all undergraduate ENGL courses
2. take a maximum of one ENGL graduate course per semester and a maximum of two total ENGL graduate courses prior to completion of the undergraduate ENGL BA degree.
MA-ENGL Courses Permitted:
Any two of the following graduate courses qualify as accepted courses for the ENGL ABM Degree program:
- ENGL 6311 Creative Writing Workshop, ENGL 7371 The Writer and the Writer’s Work, ENGL 7321 Literary Forms may replace ENGL 3311 Creative Writing Workshop
- ENGL 7339 Literature of Identity and Power may replace ENGL 4195 Special Studies in English
- ENGL 7342 Literature and Gender may replace ENGL 3375 Gender Issues in Literature and Language
- ENGL 7343 Literature, Race, and Class may replace ENGL 4395 Special Studies in English
- ENGL 7356 Literary Translation may replace ENGL 5382 Language and Society
- ENGL 7392 Special Topics may replace any Special Studies in English including ENGL 4195 , ENGL 4295 , ENGL 4395
